French Open LIVE: Scores and results from Roland Garros after Gael Monfils wins five

Jul 01, 2023

Thiago Seyboth Wild produced the upset of the French Open so far as the world No 172 stunned second seed Daniil Medvedev in five sets. The Brazilian, 23, arrived at Roland Garros having never won a main draw match at a grand slam but prevailed against the world No 2 7-6, 6-7, 2-6 6-3 6-4. Seyboth Wild produced an astonishingly aggressive game to secure the shock result, which was also the first time he had ever played a fifth set.

In the last match of the day, veteran home favourite Gael Monfils produced a stunning comeback in a frenzied late-night atmosphere to defeat Sebastian Baez in five sets. The 36-year-old fought from 0-4 down in the deciding set and battled through cramps to pull off the extraordinary win.

Elsewhere, world No 1 Iga Swiatek took some time to warm up on breezy conditions in Paris but got her French Open defence underway with a 6-4 6-0 win against Cristina Bucsa, following victories for Elena Rybakina, Ons Jabeur and Coco Gauff - but there was a surprise defeat for 2021 winner Barbora Krejcikova. After Medvedev's shock defeat, Holger Rune, Casper Ruud and Alexander Zverev were able to progress in the men's draw.

Gael Monfils. What a legend.

GAEL MONFILS!

There is no way the rest of the French Open tops this. The 36-year-old beats Sebastian Baez in an extraordinary fifth set after being 0-4 down. The Frenchman could barely walk by the end due to cramps and hobbled through the points. But in between his movement and shot-making was explosive, as was the crowd in the Philippe-Chatrier. The crowd was stunning - right through to after midnight. What a match.

Vintage Gael Monfils!

In an incredible atmosphere on Philippe-Chatrier, the 36-year-old Frenchman comes from a set down to lead Sebastian Baez 3-6 6-3 7-5

Richard Gasque's hopes are over, though, after a defeat to compatriot Arthur Rinderknech while in the longest match of the day Guido Pella of Argentina defeated Frenchman Quentin Halys 6-4, 6-7 (7), 2-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4).

21:05 , Jamie Braidwood

What a win for Bianca Andreescu! The former US Open champion, who has not progressed past the third round of a grand slam since winning that title, prevails in three sets and over two hours against Victoria Azarenka.

It's a brilliant result for the Canadian, who came from a set down and 1-3 in the second, in what was a excellent match overall. There was a lot of excitement around the meeting of two grand slam winners, and it delivered.

Daniil Medvedev had no regrets after being knocked out in the first round of the French Open, showing more relief that his claycourt season was finally over.

The red dirt is the world number two's least favourite surface even though the Russian won the Rome Masters in the run-up to Roland Garros, and Medvedev made it even clearer on Tuesday after losing 7-6(5) 6-7(6) 2-6 6-3 6-4 to Brazilian qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild.

"Every time it finishes I’m happy. So I’m happy. I’m happy again. Doesn't matter, one time quarters, one time fourth round, a lot of times first round," Medvedev told reporters.

"Today because of the wind and the dry court, I had my mouth full of clay since probably the third game of the match, and I don't like it. I don't know if people like to eat clay, to have clay in their bags, in their shoes, the socks, white socks, you can throw them to the garbage after the clay season. Maybe some people like it. I don't."

Second seed Daniil Medvedev became the highest-ranked player to exit the tournament after a 7-6(5) 6-7(6) 2-6 6-3 6-4 defeat by Brazilian qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild in a marathon contest that lasted more than four hours.

Sixth seed Holger Rune beat Christopher Eubanks 6-4 3-6 7-6(2) 6-2, avoiding a first-round shock after being tested by the American. The Dane is primed for another deep run at Roland Garros, having knocked out Stefanos Tsitsipas en route to last year's quarter-finals.

Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina continued her fine run on clay and moved into the second round after easing to a 6-4 6-2 win over promising Czech teenager Brenda Fruhvirtova.

Earlier, 2021 winner Barbora Krejcikova crashed out after a 6-2 6-4 defeat to Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine.

Iga Swiatek (1), Poland, def. Cristina Bucsa, Spain, 6-4, 6-0.

18:35 , Jamie Braidwood

Iga Swiatek: "First rounds are always tricky, especially first sets. I don't remember it being so windy here but I was able to get through it and play better in the second set.

"There's no point in looking back at previous successes - this is a new journey. I know this court well but I’m only trying to focus on the future.

"I have my own journey but it's nice we have such solid players on the WTA [in Rybakina and Sabalenka] but to be honest I don't really care. I only worry about myself."

18:33 , Jamie Braidwood

Ruthless from the French Open champion, utterly ruthless.

Iga Swiatek took about 20 or 25 minutes to get going, but once she did the world No 1 looked supreme - wrapping up a 6-4 6-0 win.

Bucsa fought hard in the first set but didn't stand much of a chance when Swiatek found her level.

18:24 , Jamie Braidwood

It's around about now that you start smelling Swiatek's bagel factory...

Swiatek has been utterly dominant since the start of the second set and marches into a double break thanks to a couple of crushing forehands.

This match looks done but can Bucsa get on the board?

18:18 , Jamie Braidwood

Swiatek breaks to start the second! This is the world No 1 finding her rhythm as she takes on Bucsa from the baseline - Swiatek's serve is finding its spots more regularly now too, while Bucsa's level has dropped.

Swiatek sitting comfortably here on Philippe-Chatrier.

18:09 , Jamie Braidwood

Holger Rune - who now does not have Daniil Medvedev to worry about - is through to the second round.

The sixth seed defeats Christopher Eubanks 6-4 3-6 7-6 6-2 to get his campaign up and running.

18:07 , Jamie Braidwood

And just like that, Swiatek takes the opening set!

Bucsa led 30-0 on serve but Swiatek just stepped up the returns and upped the pace, and Bucsa couldn't live with it.

But Swiatek just had to grind that out - she heads off the court and will want to cut out the unforced errors (15) when she returns for the second.

18:02 , Jamie Braidwood

Iga Swiatek played Cristina Bucsa at the Australian Open at the start of the year.

She only dropped one game and won 6-1 6-0.

This is far more of a contest - and Swiatek has to save a break point after two wild swings on the forehand and backhand sides.

But she stays ahead - and now Bucsa is saving to stay in the set.

17:49 , Jamie Braidwood

We have another break - the fourth game in a row - but it means Swiatek is level once more. Both players struggling a little with their serve, but Swiatek is returning with plenty of confidence.

And now Swiatek edges ahead - the world No 1 holds serve, and is that the moment she starts to pull away?

17:46 , Jamie Braidwood

Thiago Seyboth Wild produced one of the biggest-ever upsets at the French Open as the world no 172 sent the second seed Daniil Medvedev crashing out of Roland Garros.

Seyboth Wild had not won a Tour-level match all year and arrived in Paris without a main-draw win at a grand slam, but produced a stunning performance to defeat Medvedev in five sets.

It was the fifth time Medvedev, the world No 2, had lost in the first round of the French Open but the Russian actually came into the tournament as one of the favourites after winning the Rome title last week and his improved form on clay.

Seyboth Wild, 23, was playing a fifth set for the first time but prevailed 7-6, 6-7, 2-6 6-3 6-4 to advance to the second round.

Who is Thiago Seyboth Wild? Former tennis prodigy stuns Daniil Medvedev

17:45 , Jamie Braidwood

Is another upset brewing on Philippe-Chatrier? Bucsa breaks for the second time in the match and Swiatek has yet to adjust to the conditions. Swiatek trails once again in this opening set.

17:37 , Jamie Braidwood

Swiatek breaks back at the first attempt. The wind is still blowing a fair gust on Philippe-Chatrier and the early evening shadow is starting to drift its way across the court, so you could say the conditions are less than ideal.

17:31 , Jamie Braidwood

Break! Swiatek hasn't woken up yet and Bucsa takes a surprise early break on Philippe-Chatrier.

Rune, meanwhile, takes the third-set tiebreak 7-2 to lead Eubanks.

17:26 , Jamie Braidwood

Bucsa gets her first hold after a couple of misses from Swiatek - that must be a relief.

Elsewhere, Holger Rune has been pegged back by Christopher Eubanks... and they are currently in a third-set tiebreak!

17:12 , Jamie Braidwood

Up next, Iga Swiatek begins the defence of her French Open title against the Spaniard Cristina Bucsa.

After the drama of the previous five-set battle, there are plenty empty seats on Philippe-Chatrier but those should fill up.

Swiatek was on stunning form at Roland Garros last year - will the Pole return to dominant form again?

17:01 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Just astonishing. Totally astonishing. The bottom half of the men's singles draw is properly open now, and you’d have to suggest on that evidence, Thiago Seyboth Wild could be here into next week. Recovery will be key, of course - he’ll next face either Guido Pella or Quentin Halys, with the former a set ahead on Court 7.

16:57 , Harry Latham-Coyle

This was no fluke, either. Daniil Medvedev was a little short of his best, sure, but Thiago Seyboth Wild had to win that match, and played some incredible tennis. That forehand is quite something.

The Brazilian beams of his win: "I’ve watched Daniil play for my entire career and I’ve always dreamed of playing on this court. In my best dreams, I beat them. It's a dream come true.

"I really just wanted to get angles, try to use my forehand against his. I mean, it worked pretty well," he adds with a nervous chuckle.

"It was pretty tough. I’m reallly happy with the way I played."

16:54 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Thiago Seyboth Wild 7-6, 6-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 Daniil Medvedev

The win of his life, his first at Tour level for 15 months. Thiago Seyboth Wild sits down and shakes his head in disbelief. He's beaten the world number two!

Daniil Medvedev slopes away, beaten, bruised. All that work, all that success, all those improvements made on clay, and his hopes of a French Open challenge are gone. An extraordinary upset.

16:52 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Seismic! The second seed, the star of the clay court season so far, falls in the first round to a man who had never previously won a match at a Grand Slam.

Thiago Seyboth Wild, take a bow!

16:51 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Pretty good! A massive forehand! Match point!

16:51 , Harry Latham-Coyle

30-all! Nearly a brilliant salvage from the back right corner, hooking a fine forehand past Medvedev, but it is a couple of inches long. How's the Brazilian's bottle?

16:50 , Harry Latham-Coyle

His right index finger wags with joy. Three more points needed.

There's one of them! A fatigued waft on the forehand side from Medvedev, who appears to be beaten by a quirky bounce.

One back for the Russian. A loose drop shot and Seyboth Wild can't beat him at the net. 30-15.

16:49 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Thiago Seyboth Wild is up early, a wipe of the face with the towel and back on to the playing surface, taking three balls, tossing one away. Philippe-Chatrier pulsates with his nervous energy.

First serve into the net. The second is solid, hopping up. Into rally play, neither man playing ambitiously. Out comes a big backhand, Medvedev on his heels. Up to the net comes Seyboth Wild....put away! 15-0!

16:47 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Medvedev holds, but not before Seyboth Wild lasers a 45th forehand winner by him. He will serve for the match and one of the great Roland-Garros upsets.

16:45 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Hold here and the match will surely be Thiago Seyboth Wild's. He's been utterly, utterly superb, somehow fighting back having seemed physically and emotionally wrecked after squandering a golden chance to take the second set.

Held to love! Magnificent! A calm approach to the net and the most delectable little low volley drop shot, almost pipetted over the net, seals it. One game away...

16:40 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Double fault number 15 of the day for Daniil Medvedev. Those lanky, lactic acid filled limbs are straining.

Not there. A pleasant tonk as he rattles the clock beyond Thiago Seyboth Wild with an ace.

But the Brazilian earns another break point with a deep groundstroke that clips a sliver of baseline. Can Medvedev save it? Yes, holding on in a brilliant exchange, clawing out a half-volley to his right after appearing to be wrong-footed.

Another chance for Seyboth Wild is earned wth that crunching forehand. And Medvedev sweeps a cross-court backhand long. The Russian is broken again!

16:35 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Eek. Both men are struggling on serve, feeling the impacts of a match that has now lasted nigh on four hours. Three break points for Medvedev as Seyboth Wild chucks an ambitious forehand wide, and we’re back to all square in the decider as the Brazilian finds the top of the net.

16:32 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Another break for the Brazilian! Sensational stuff, taking the first of two break points with a smooth as silk forehand up the line after a dreadful drop shot from Daniil Medvedev leaves the door ajar.

16:29 , Jamie Braidwood

Pressure! From 40-15 up on serve, Seyboth Wild nets and then double daults to faults as Medvedev gets back to deuce. And that's wild from the qualifier! He lashes at a forehand midcourt and sends it wide!

Break point: Seyboth Wild goes for the serve and volley, and Medvedev drills the forehand down the line! Another twist!

16:21 , Jamie Braidwood

Seyboth Wild grinds his way back from 15-30 on serve to take the hold, grinning from ear to ear and pumping his fist to his box.

The Brazilian is enjoying this. Medvedev is not.

16:16 , Jamie Braidwood

So, here we go. Can Seyboth Wild, the world No 172, pull off the upset against Medvedev, the world No 2 and Rome champion?

Vicious ball-striking from Seyboth wild hauls him back from 0-40 to deuce in the opening game - and then the backhand crosscourt winner!

Break point: Medvedev saves it with a powerful backhand, but Seyboth Wild stays on the attack and sets up another.

And Medvedev goes long as he talks a forehand volley from midcourt! Seyboth Wild breaks to start the fifth!

16:09 , Jamie Braidwood

The loose clay on Philppe-Chatrier is being whipped up by the breezy conditions and the ballboys have to shield their eyes for a moment.

But Seyboth Wild only has eyes for a fifth set! The Brazilian serves it on and as Medvedev pushes a backhand long, we’re going the distance!

Remarkable from the qualifier to turn the momentum around once again - unbelievably, this will be his first five-set match!

16:02 , Jamie Braidwood

Seyboth Wild moves a game away from the fourth set in this dramatic contest.

Holger Rune, meanwhile, is up and running against Christopher Eubanks. The Dan takes the opening set 6-4.

15:59 , Jamie Braidwood

Medvedev shushing the crowd alert! He was disputing a shot from Seyboth Wild that caught the baseline and turned on the crowd as the booed. That was on deuce, after Medvedev had game point to get back on serve, before Medvedev plants an overhead into the net.

On break point, Seyboth Wild finds the forehand winner down the line and the Brazilian edges ahead once more!

Elsewhere, there are high hopes for Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina at Roland Garros following her Rome title. The fourth seed takes the opening set 6-4 against the 16-year-old Czech Brenda Fruhvirtova.

15:49 , Harry Latham-Coyle

But the serving errors are catching - a second serve teeters on the net cord and fals the wrong side, giving Daniil Medvedev three break points. He needs only one, Thiago Seyboth Wild foolishly opting to play a ball drifting out and only succeeding in cutting it limply into the base of the net. A break to love. Back on serve.

15:43 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Indeed it has. Tidy stuff from Thiago Seyboth Wild, finishing his hold off with a handsome bit of serve and volley. Back to the chair with a 3-0 lead.

15:40 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Wow! Three double faults from Medvedev and Seyboth Wild breaks! It remains a little blustery out on Philippe-Chatrier, but that's rather lax from the Russian, and must surely give his opponent a real lift.

15:38 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Nearly at the three hour mark, now, but Thiago Seyboth Wild still has spirit in him. He holds to 30 to strike first in the fourth.

Elena Rybakina has won the first set against the 16-year-old Brenda Fruhvirtova, who broke early on but faded a little to allow the fourth seed the lead.

15:33 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The Kosovo Tennis Federation is preparing an official complaint about Novak Djokovic's on-camera message and will call for the 22-time grand slam champion to be fined.

After his first-round victory at the French Open on Monday, Djokovic wrote on the camera lens: "Kosovo is the heart of Serbia. Stop the violence."

Kosovo declared independence in 2008 but Serbia has never recognised that and violence broke out in the north of the country over the weekend after ethnic Albanian mayors were installed in Serbian-dominated areas, with NATO peacekeepers among those injured.

Kosovo Tennis Federation to call for Novak Djokovic fine over on-camera message

15:30 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A crunching ace and Daniil Medvedev wins the third with the momentum having very much swung. 7-6, 6-7, 2-6.

Thiago Seyboth Wild calls for some attention, asking for some strapping and talcum powder on his right index finger with the wear and tear of a long match beginning to be felt.

15:24 , Harry Latham-Coyle

But that's a timely break back from Rybakina, and we’re back on serve on the second show court.

Daniil Medvedev breaks again on Court Philippe-Chatrier, but there will be a pause before he serves for the set - there's a bit of claret on the Russian's moustache, with an untimely nosebleed forcing a delay. Out come the tissues, forced up by the septum to try and stem the flow.

15:20 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A couple of break points for Seyboth Wild, but a brace of aces eventually shut the door as Medvedev builds on the break.

Over on Simonne-Mathieu, men's sixth seed Holger Rune is just getting started against Christopher Eubanks, who’ll be hoping to land a few punches.

Slightly further ahead are Elena Rybakina and Brenda Fruhvirtova on Suzanne Lenglen - and the Czech qualifier has broken the Kazakh fourth seed in the first set. Rybakina struggling a little on her second serve.

15:19 , Jamie Braidwood

Alexander Zverev earned a 7-6 (6) 7-6 (0) 6-1 first-round win over South African Lloyd Harris on his return to Roland Garros a year after sustaining a serious ankle injury during his semi-final against eventual champion Rafael Nadal.

The German will next face Slovakia's Alex Molcan, who saw off home hope Hugo Gaston in straight sets earlier.

15:12 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Break points for Medvedev; saved by Seyboth Wild, clearly starting to feel the fatigue but keeping that forehand punchy. A 50th unforced error of the match wastes his chance to seal the game.

And it could prove costly. Medvedev slides and stoops effectively to sweep up a Seyboth Wild volley, squeezing a backhand across court past the Brazilian at the net.

A double fault. Medvedev breaks again.

15:04 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The Philippe-Chatrier crowd like that - Thiago Seyboth Wild breaks back! A crisp backhand to earn break point and then no further strokes required - Medvedev flights his second serve long. Two games all.

14:59 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Medvedev pounces on another couple of Seyboth Wild errors to hold in relative comfort.

One man already through to the second round is Alexander Zverev, who has ended Lloyd Harris's hopes over on Court Simonne-Mathieu. After requiring tiebreaks in tight sets to take a 2-0 advantage, things were rather simpler for the 22nd seed in the third, 6-1 sealing his progress. Just one of eight break points taken by Harris, which will disappoint the South African. Alex Molčan will be next for the Olympic singles champion.

14:53 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Come on then, Thiago, time to reset. This will be a big test for a guy without much top level experience, needing to bounce back from throwing away such an opportunity to take a two-set lead.

And that isn't the prettiest of starts. A couple of unforced errors, a couple of missed serves, and an immediate break for Medvedev after the resumption.

14:51 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Cameron Norrie has hit back at Novak Djokovic's accusations of poor sportsmanship.

The pair had an unexpectedly fiery clash in Rome two weeks ago, with the main flashpoint coming when Norrie hit Djokovic on the ankle with a smash after the Serbian had turned away to walk back to the baseline.

In his press conference afterwards, Djokovic criticised Norrie not just for that moment but for what he perceived as the British No 1 celebrating in his face after winning points, as well as a medical timeout he took prior to the final game of the match.

Djokovic, who won the contest comfortably, said: "Those are the things that we players know in the locker room it's not fair play, it's not how we treat each other."

Norrie did not see what the fuss was about, saying of the smash: "I apologised straight away and I didn't see him. I looked up and hit the ball down low. I didn't see him turn and concede the point.

"I wanted to win, it was one of those matches where he's one of the best players in the world and I wanted to play my best and compete as hard as I could.

"I didn't think I was in his face at all. I think, if anyone knows me, I’m pretty vocal in some matches. It was a regular tennis match for me."

Cameron Norrie hits back at Novak Djokovic over bad sportsmanship as feud continues

14:48 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Oh, Daniil Medvedev, you lucky, lucky boy. It should have been 2-0 to Thiago Seyboth Wild, but the Brazilian never quite recovers from that undisciplined forehand miss, and plops an overhead volley both wide and long to give Medvedev the set. 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (8-6).

14:45 , Harry Latham-Coyle

What a miss! the first of two set points sits up beautifully for Seyboth Wild, but in his haste to seal a two-set lead he puts much too much oomph through the ball, and squanders the opportunity.

Medvedev holds on in an elongated rally to save the other. Change of ends, 6-6 in set and tiebreak.

14:43 , Harry Latham-Coyle

And now Seyboth Wild gets a mini-break. A handy clip of the net cord forces Medvedev out of flow, and the second seed can only lift a tame low forehand long. 5-4 with two serves from the Brazilian to come...

14:39 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The clock ticks to the two hour mark as Seyboth Wild gets his footing wrong and is forced into a slightly casual slice drop shot that fails to clear the net. 2-1 to Medvedev.

But how about that for an answer! An extraordinary point sees both men exploring every crevice and cranny of the court, with Seyboth Wild somehow surviving three fierce forehands to get back on serve in the tie break.

14:36 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Tasty! Thiago Seyboth Wild takes us to another tiebreak with an exocet forehand up the line.

14:29 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Swiftly back to Philippe Chatrier, where Thiago Seyboth Wild has wasted no time levelling things up again. A minute and 16 seconds are all he requires to hold to love.

14:28 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A real fright early on for Coco Gauff, but last year's French Open runner-up is back to winning ways at Roland-Garros, and is through to the second round. 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, and an encounter with either Julia Grabher or Arantxa Rus is next for the sixth seed.

14:26 , Harry Latham-Coyle

No lack of intensity there! Fearsome hitting from the baseline by Seyboth Wild earns him two break points...but Medvedev saves both with some outstanding defensive work!

Inexplicable! Medvedev gets advantage and then has the simplest of backhand winners to take the game with Seyboth Wild stood still awaitig his fate, but the Russian finds the net.

It doesn't prove costly, though, with Medvedev closing it out at the next opportunity. The Brazilian will serve to stay in the set.

14:19 , Harry Latham-Coyle

But is some of the intensity just starting to go out of Seyboth Wild's game? A couple of errors that have been absent from his game so far in this match grant Medvedev the chance to break.

Can the Brazilian hold firm? Yes, an intelligent move up to the net to kill the point with a calm backhand block into the surface. On we go.

14:13 , Harry Latham-Coyle

That forehand really is something to behold, a great sledgehammer of a thing that is repeatedly forcing Medvedev to throw limbs out desperately to keep points alive. All on serve still.

Alexander Zverev has doubled his advantage against Lloyd Harris, again taking the tie break to put himself one set away from the second round. The South African has had a little bit of medical attention, too.

On Suzanne-Lenglen, it appears Coco Gauff may have moved beyond her early scare - she's broken Rebeka Masarova early in the decider.

14:03 , Harry Latham-Coyle

There don't appear to be too many weaknesses in Thiago Seyboth Wild's game. Even a fine defender like Medvedev is really having to scrap to combat his combination of first serve and forehand strength.

13:57 , Harry Latham-Coyle

All on serve so far in the second.

13:56 , Jamie Braidwood

13:47 , Harry Latham-Coyle

And perhaps that pause has just disrupted Seyboth Wild, who cedes the first game on Medvedev's serve rather easily.

Coco Gauff, meanwhile, has righted the ship, drawing level with Rebeka Masarova in taking the second set 6-1. Into a decider.

13:45 , Harry Latham-Coyle

For all the comfort he’d shown on clay over the last couple of weeks, that looked a lot like the Daniil Medvedev of previous years, battling himself and the big hitting of his opponent and seemingly struggling to settle. The second seed nips away for a break between sets.

13:40 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Thiago Seyboth Wild has come out swinging and Daniil Medvedev has some thinking to do. A brilliant start from the Brazilian, who played the much more consistent tennis in that set, using his forehand powerfully to keep Medvedev on the defensive. The qualifier takes it 7-5 in the tie break.

13:32 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Two more holds and into a tie-break we hurry. Based on the match flow so far, that might suit Seyboth Wild, who’ll serve first once the wind stops gusting.

13:27 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A bit better from Medvedev on Philippe-Chatrier, asking the crowd to lift with him as he ensures this set goes deeper. Five apiece.

It was the final last year for Coco Gauff, but she faces a real fight to even get out of the first round this year, dropping the first set to Rebeka Marasova, ranked 71st in the world. Eight break points squandered by Gauff so far, with her forehand still a little too hit and miss. Work to be done...

The Brazilian is having rather fewer issues on serve. He's one game away from a one set lead.

13:17 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Daniil Medvedev's first serve is just about keeping him alive, the Russian riding it save a couple of break points again to hold. Thiago Seyboth Wild is pouncing on anything short from the second seed, showing real conviction and skill in his stroke choices.

Elsewhere, Alexander Zverev is a set to the good against Lloyd Harris, emerging 8-6 on top after a first set tie break.

Hmm. Something isn't quite right with Daniil Medvedev. His second serve is all over the place, with the wind evident as his baggy white shirt flaps about, and there are a few errors in rally play, too. He denies Seyboth on two break points to salvage a hold.

And Medvedev isn't the only contender having an early scare - Coco Gauff is 4-2 down in the first set over on Suzanne-Lenglen. Swiss-born Spaniard Rebeka Masarova, like Seyboth Wild, has a bit of clay court prowess and has begun nicely.

Three games in a row for the 23-year-old Seyboth Wild, saving a break point to take his first lead of the match. The 2018 Junior US Open champion has two titles on clay at challenger level this year, and is showing that sort of form early on.

12:53 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Despite that difficult start, Thiago Seyboth Wild doesn't seem at all overawed by the occasion and the Philippe-Chatrier stage. He breaks Medvedev to love to get back on level terms, and is moving beautifully, cutting lovely shapes through the clay.

Also stepping out onto court in the early Paris afternoon is Coco Gauff, last year's runner-up, who begins against Rebeka Masarova on Suzanne-Lenglen. We’ll keep half an eye on the American's attempts to get going in this year's competition.

Another former Grand Slam finalist out and about is Alexander Zverev, still working his way back towards his best after that long injury lay-off last year. He's tied at five in the first set of his encounter with South Africa's Lloyd Harris, who also had a difficult back half of 2022 that saw him sidelined after surgery on his wrist.

Medvedev holds in his first service game.

12:41 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The Brazilian drops to 15-30 with a couple of early nerves apparent, but gets himself back in front by winning a fierce exchange at the net, reading Medvedev's intentions well to dart left and block back a vicious forehand.

But the wind plays havoc with his ball toss, drawing a double fault, and Medvedev breaks right away.

12:31 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Daniil Medvedev is out on court, ready to continue his summer of love on the clay courts. The second seed has made dramatic strides on the surface this year, and shapes as a real contender.

He begins against Brazil's Thiago Seyboth Wild, who has got a bit of clay court credibility, too. They are tossing up - Medvedev elects to receive.

One second round encounter confirmed in the women's draw is Mirra Andreeva against Diane Parry, with both players coming through their opening matches this morning. The ludicrously talented Andreeva, so impresssive on her run to the fourth round in Madrid, claimed a very impressive 6-2, 6-1 win over Alison Riske-Amritraj, while Parry advanced past Anhelina Kalinina, the 25th seed.

Racist behaviour directed at athletes is getting worse and even software designed to protect them from it has little impact, world number 30 Sloane Stephens said on Monday.

The American, speaking after her straight-sets victory over Karolina Pliskova in the French Open first round, said she had had to endure it her whole tennis career.

"Yes, it's obviously been a problem my entire career," said Stephens, who is Black. "It has never stopped. If anything, it's only gotten worse."

Another low seed cruising through is Casper Ruud, who has finished the job against Elias Ymer. 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 for the man seeded fourth, who settled in nicely after a slightly erratic start. After a tough month, that’ll make last year's beaten finalist feel a lot better.

12:12 , Harry Latham-Coyle

It’ll be French opposition next for Ons Jabeur, with the winner of the match between Océane Dodin and Séléna Janicijevic next up in a clash of compatriots a little later on Court 6.

12:11 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Done and dusted - some trademark flair from Ons Jabeur, overcoming a potentially tricky first round opponent and showing few signs of discomfort after some recent injury issues. 6-4, 6-1, and into the second round.

...but will at least last another game, Bronzetti throwing caution to the wind and releasing a couple of forehand hammers to break Jabeur and prolong the contest.

12:04 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Things are snowballing, rather, for Lucia Bronzetti, who would have arrived with such optimism after that maiden WTA title last year. She drops to 0-40 and is starting 5-0 in the face, but rallies to get back to deuce.

But the third break for Jabeur is eventually secured, cutting a drop backhand with precision and then drawing a dragged backhand out of her Italian opponent, who isn't long for this tournament...

11:53 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Yep, the seventh seed is enjoying in, weaving in a couple of those trademark devilish drop shots on occasion but largely content to simply biff Bronzetti back with baseline power. A delightfully deft half-volley is the highlight of her second break of the set.

11:46 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Jabeur is moving very well, which is great news after that calf issue that has hampered her lately. She pumps a fist in delight at a tonked backhand that clips the inside of the line with Bronzetti well beaten to her right, and seals the deal to break the Italian to open the second set.

11:42 , Harry Latham-Coyle

That is an emphatic way to end the set - a rapid hold to love, the first of the match, and the seventh seed etches the first mark in the set column.

11:39 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Right, we’ll leave our Nordic friends there for now with Casper Ruud firmly in the ascendancy, because things are tightening up on Philippe-Chatrier. After that hot start, Ons Jabeur has now lost the last three games to rather let Lucia Bronzetti back into the set.

It's 5-4 as the players take their seats again, though Jabeur will serve for the set.

11:37 , Harry Latham-Coyle

But not for long! Two more Ymer errors and it's a repeat of the first set, Ruud up 6-4, 6-4 and perhaps just beginning to contemplate his afternoon plans.

11:35 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Elias Ymer cramps himself for room trying to smash Casper Ruud out of the point at 30-all, ceding a set point. Ruud misses out on that opportunity, and then again after a Ymer double fault. The Swede battles on.

11:30 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A good reset from Casper Ruud in game eight of the second set, taking the sting out of Ymer's comeback with some tidy work in the pair's exchanges to hold cleanly.

11:27 , Harry Latham-Coyle

So much for Ons Jabeur potentially facing a first round test - the Tunisian is showing off her full range of strokes (including this outrageous leaping baseline backhand drop shot) and looks very impressive so far, up 5-1 against Lucia Bronzetti without too much fuss.

11:25 , Harry Latham-Coyle

This has been good in these last two games from the qualifier, beginning to hit with a bit more venom, grunting after almost every stroke. Ruud is making a few positional errors, opening up inviting angles and challenging Ymer to oblige.

The hold is confirmed with a crisp ace down the centre.
